📖 This Week's Story

On August 15, Greeks celebrate the most beloved summer feast — the Dormition of the Theotokos, or "Koimisis tis Theotokou." The Theotokos is the Virgin Mary — the mother of Christ. The Church teaches that when the Panagia's earthly life ended, she was taken up to heaven. Many Greek islands and towns have huge celebrations on this day! Churches are packed, processions fill the streets, and flowers are everywhere. In many Greek villages, the icon of the Panagia is carried through the streets while people throw flowers. It's one of the most beautiful sights in all of Greece. The Panagia watches over all of us with a mother's love.
